For a while now I've been getting lag in a lot of my games, mostly the newer ones like oblivion and COD4. The lag always comes up after the level or cell loads. I'll be looking around and the game will lag for a second or two and then it will play smooth. If i do a quick 360 degree spin and I let it lag afterwards it will play smooth until I enter a new part of the level that I haven't seen before then it lags some more. My friends and I have come to the conclusion that my ddr400 ram is at fault and that I should have gotten ddr2 memory because I have 2 gigs of it and I meet the requirements for all of my games. I want to get confirmation that my ram is the problem before I buy parts for a new system. My current specs are below.

AMD X2 64 3800 @2ghz

2gigs of ddr400 memory

ASUS a8v-xe motherboard

nvidia 7950gt

80gb Hitachi hd with a 8mb cache

specs for my new system

Seagate barracuda 7200rpm 250gb HD with a 16mb cache

ASUS M2N-sli nvidia nforce 560 motherboard

kingston 2gb ddr2 800 memory

AMD athlon 64 X2 4800 2.5ghz am2 socket processor

I'm going to re use my 7950gt

So thats about it I came to these forums because I thought people here would be more knowledgeable of these things than people on gamespot.

What setting do you play COD4 at? i played the game with medium settings on with Single core 3.0 ghz cpu, 1GB DDR RAM on a crappy Radeon X550 without any issues

I can play it at around medium and get an ok frame rate but I'll still get lag when I set it down to low. This goes for oblivion too.

I think you're probably on the right track.

If your proposed upgrades don't solve the problem , then you're stuck upgrading your GPU to something like an 8800GT512mb (can be had for 150$ or less these days)
