This Windows Vista machine will not shut down when you select "Shut down". It stays on the blue shut down screen until power button is held - no matter how long. Like it will not release something running in the background. An suggestions?

Had identical problem last few days and found an easy solution on the Microsoft site.

Do the following:
Go to start menu. Select "All Programs". Select "Accessories". Right click on "Command Prompt".
Choose "Run as Administrator".
When command box appears type in : sfc/scannow and then press enter.

In my case, the verification process started immediatedly and took about 15 mins to complete. I then got a message saying "windows Resource Protection found corrupted files and successfully repaired them".

I had to reboot my computer for changes to take affect.

Problem seems to have been solved.

Good luck.
