I just built a new pc about 3/4 days ago and its run by a e8400, i left it at stock cos i was too scared to OC so far.

I left SpeedStep on and it runs fine from 2ghz not under load to 3ghz under load.

However when i turn SpeedStep off.... the clock jumps up and down between 2ghz and 3ghz... is this natural?

Measured using CPU-Z

Hi KxK, nope, if you turn off speed step then it should stay at 3.0GHz. See if C1E is enable. If it is try turning that off too.

Where would C1E be under?

It should be under Power management would be my best guess. I don't know what board you are playing with since it is not listed in this thread.

What motherboard do you use? I saw a similar pattern with my Q9450 on a Gigabyte EP45-DS3R. My processor is overclocked to 3.2GHz and I found that the "EIST" function messes with things. Turn that off. On mine it would fluctuate between 2.4GHz and 3.2GHz. I turned it off and it stays at a constant 3.2GHz.

I doubt the clock is jumping, only the reading...

Try a SuperPi 1m and post your results, it should be obvious if anything is amiss...

And what is SuperPi 1m? :S
