i am building a rig in 3 months for about £900 - £1000


i have all this ready to buy:




ASRock Z77 Pro4 (Socket 1155)

AMD Radeon HD 6970 GDDR5 (2GB)

is there anything i am missing?


will all that work together and how futureproof is it? how long will it last at running games on max/ high settings ?

yes it will work, lower profile ram would be better as the heatsink may cover 1 of your ram slots (i used crucial ballistix and had about 1mm of clearance.

As to how future proof, no-one knows, the latest unreal 'demonstration engine' struggles on a 680. Make your gpu choice closer to the time, try for 7XXX. The cpu is not going to change between now and then.

Personally i'd get a cheaper HDD for storage and some installations and buy an SSD for the OS, you can get 120Gb for less than £100 now, and it'll wipe the floor with even a WD black, or use a 60GB drive and use the intel caching solution.

Also should i go for Radeon HD7950 instead of the 6950? i will only be on 1920x1080 with 1 monitor.

I found these, and at 88824 the timings are better. the voltage of 1.6 recommended for your memory is out of spec for IVB, and you're overvolting the onboard memory controller.

I'd forget all about choosing the gpu until the time comes, there will be price movements between now and then. Set your budget, and see what fits when you get there. ATI might be pushing HD8xxx by then to combat the 680 (if the stocks improve) so you'll get either a cheaper 6/7xxx or an 8xxx.

if you are spending £1000 you should be able to do better

at least a 120gb ssd and a 500gb data drive and a better graphics card maybe a gtx670 or amd 7970 if you prefer amd

have a look here and build your pc to get an idea

and those prices include the build costs so less if you buy the parts and build it yourself

I'd say so, i'd swap the 120Gb corsair for a crucial M4, same price, and IMO a better drive.
There is an assumption that you have a copy of windows that you can use?
