Please can someone help me out. I bought an dvd writer and connecting the device to my pentium 3 Compaq pc it only detects cd writable plates. Whenever i go to my computer to view my drive d it sees the drive as DVD-RAM drive instead DVD-RW. PLEASE what do i do to overcome this problem.

It's quite possible your new DVD writer isn't completely compatible with your old computer's motherboard. Mind sharing what model of Compaq you using?

My Sony and Asus DVD-RW writers were also detected as DVD-RAM drives, though they could read/write on DVD's just fine.

Maybe the drive is defective?
