Hey there, I finally have my Oblivion set up right and I get from 30-60 fps, but i get a lot of stuttering in game, why? How do I eliminate the stuttering and make it more seamless like the 360 version? I have a good enough set up. 4200 X 2, 9800 gtx 2 gb ddr2 800 mhz ram windows xp pro service pack 2 64 bit edition. Why do I get a ton of stuttering, its just not smooth!

What resolution are you running? Are you forcing AA through your driver software?

What kind of stuttering?

There is the kind that happens every 3-4 seconds and there's the kind that is pretty much constant.

Quick, simple, uncomplicated answer MORE RAM! You are running a 64bit OS with 2Gb ram? Go for 4+ and there will be an improvement, another thing try turning off the grass in the game options, and lowering your AA a bit.

P.S. the 360 version is a port, most of the extremely good graphics have been "nerfed" for lack of a better word.

A faster processor would probably help too. The X2 4200 is not terribly fast and Oblivion likes fast processors. Also, look into a tweakguide for setting up Oblivion right. The tweaks include memory optimization and multithreading. Try defragging your hard drive too.

What kind of studdering is it? I also experienced some weird studdering issues on a more than capable setup. It was generally smooth, but every 3-5 minutes, the screen would freeze/ and studder for about 15-25 seconds. I found out that it was actually movie codec's installed on my machine that for some reason would cause problems. With DivX uninstalled, it worked great. If this is something similar to what your experiencing, just thought I would post that little side note.

Try disabling sound effects in the configuration files. I wont go into it but I will say it helped me get to the bottom of my stuttering problems.

I am running at 1280x1024 resolution - my monitors max without vertical sync. Basically, it's decently stutterfree, but it would be just these tiny little stutters every 15 seconds to a minute or so that would just be so annoying... I don't understand why it's doing that at all, because it does it under max settings no matter what, whether i have AA on 2x or 16x or AF on 16X... etc. I would get the same fps performance and I don't know why, my processor is good enough because I looked at a review with a q 6600 and it was getting the same fps I was getting. I am running AA through driver software through nvidia control panel. As well as AF... That's not my question, I'm getting decent enough fps, none really less then 30 unless I have 8 guards chasing me. 2 gigs of ram should be enough... xbox 360 only has like 256 or 512 ram so that shouldn't matter anyway. I just wanna know why am I getting brief frequent choppyness? ( I shouldn't have to turn down my settings if 30-60 is suppose to be seamless....) =(

Like your last thread on Oblivion, you haven't bothered to test anything have you cymus? What is so hard about downloading cpu-z or using task manager to get some sort of idea what your cpu or ram is doing?

The thing is, I have no idea what to look for when using this program.... My fps read 50 average, 30-40 in the forest and town, but when i go up to npc it drops down from 50 to 30 and no less that 18 fps... That's terrible for my set up, I get the same performance on default settings vs maxed out settings, so I'm pretty much confused. Explain to me how to use cpu-z or give me a link to read about it more and what to look for...

It's definetly lack of RAM. The stutters will be the game loading out in the RAm again. Upgrade to 4gb and you'll be fine. Then again, a faster CPU wouldn't go a miss. That x2 4200+ of yours is REALLY going to be bottlenecking that 9800gx2.

You can download it here:

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

You can simply go into task manager/performance and see what your cores and memory is doing, as for knowing how to use them you simply look at load during a game, if for example your cores are at 100% all the time, you know you need more processing power, then check ram. Have you got a second monitor you can connect up?

not 9800gx2

9800gtx, 2 gb ddr2

and i think it should still be a bottleneck

While I'm running oblivion the task manager says 43-56 cpu% used and not even 1.1 gb ram being used. The game should be running perfectly then, I'll defrag one more time to see if that helps cuz I did uninstall and reinstall the game several times trying to get qarl's texture mod to work...

You have any programs running in the back ground? That might cause a problem if all of a sudden your anitvirus or some other program starts to scan the hard drive or download an update. I know smartdoctor for my Asus video card caused me problems if I did not reduce it from my desk top.

Well done cymus, you might have saved yourself alot of money!! Basically your using around 50% of your resources, which would make Oblivion very quick if you were using 100%. Now we have to find out why it's not running quicker. Does any other app slow your computer down? Also have you checked and optimised your bios settings, maybe something there is disabled?
