Return two 4850's for a 4870?

Forum Graphics & Displays : Graphics Cards Return two 4850's for a 4870?

Word :    Username :

I got two 4850's from FXVideocards, their return policy is unknown to me. Before I call them today I want to get some opinions from fellow gamers. I currently play AoC and thats it, crossfire and sli are "currently" not working/supported. I can run the game really well with a single 4850 but thats not the point, I bought 2 of them for a reason you know?

So should I wether the storm and wait for it, keeping hope, or just return them for a 4870 and have a single card sollution with better performance than the single 4850, and not have to worry about **** xfire comaptibilty issues.

I think you are better off with the 2 4850s in Crossfire:

I know the 4850 in crossfire performs better, but thats doing nothing for me right now like I said. Im playing age of conan atm and crossfire/sli arent working.

ROFL!

@ OP:

I would get a 4870 and take that $100 back and then when the time comes for more performance or when crossfire drivers start to scale better with the cards then throw in another 4870! Just my two cent!

Best,

Yea, the $100 back is definetly a plus as well.

If you can play really well with a single card, why not just return one and keep the other. But then you're going to buy some other game that does support Crossfire and you'll regret having returned that card. Do you think you'll play AoC and nothing else for the next year?

Reply to aevm

Yea im trying to make AoC my home for MMO's, which is why im upset over the crossfire issue.

You could say I jumped the gun on the cards, and its my own fault for not doing the proper research and seeing that xfire/sli are not working in the game right now.

Yeah, I think I'd return a card in that case. Your P5Q Pro is not ideal for Crossfire with those cards anyway - they won't work so well at the higher resolutions.

3ball has the best answer, period.

You return both 4850's for a 4870 as long as you can get the full $100 difference and don't get jacked with like $40 or $50 in restocking fees. You take the one 4870 until you find a game that doesn't play as good as you'd like or are willing, then you get you another 4870. You xfire those b!tches and reclaim your throne as the Supreme Commander of Video Games, muahahahaha... Really, I'm serious...

Well the P5Q runs crossfire at 8x/8x which is just fine. The FPS difference betwen a P5Q and a X38/x48 is like 2%. And I play at 1680 x 1050. But im really leaning towards the return for a 4870, but I hear FX has like a 15% restock fee.......15% of a $400 order is $60.

You'll also have some shipping costs, I bet :(

Reply to aevm

Im gonna just stop crying and stick with my 4850's. $60 restock fee, $20 to ship it back to Calli, a week + waiting for my money back, 4870 out of stock everywhere.....on and on. Thanks for the help everybody.

Spathotan, maybe this will help you. I play LOTRO,which does not support Crossfire or SLI .You see the thing is,Crossfire does not function in a windowed mode.Lotro online has an option to play in full screen mode but in reality, the full screen is simulated and will not engage the second card. But there is a way around this. in the user.ini file there is a line that says Allowfakefullscreen=True. If you change this setting to Allowfakefullscreen=False and play the game you hear that wonderful sound of the second cards fan going and notice your FPS going from around 40fps avg. to around 80fps avg with in many instances going up to 180 fps.this all on ultra high settings at 1920x1200 res. bump the res down a notch or two and i've hit well over 300 fps. lol. It sounds as if the situation is the same in AoC. try and see if such a setting exists in the user.ini , and if it does you might consider giving this option a whirl. You would think that such an east fix would be supported by the games that we play ,but who knows the mind of a developer. If this type of fix will work for AoC then your 4850's will be overkill in the game. Your FPS will be awesome. Anywhoo, hope this helps and good luck to you.

I actually have heard of a .ini file adjustment for AoC. Ill dig around when I get home.

I hear mixed things about AoC sli/crossfire.Some say it works others say it doesn't,i'll be trying out crossfire for myself in Conan today.

Reply to Ogdin

I have no problem with space, I could put two 4870's in here and id have plenty of room, only problem then would be power supply but thats another story. And yes Ahslan one 4850 does plenty the job, im getting about 10-15 more FPS than my 8800GT was, and this is with higher settings, and I can actually turn shadows on now.

So yes im not returning them. When I get home from work im going to dig around in the .ini file for AoC, maybe even try adding the "enablesli" and "enablecrossfire" lines for **** and giggles, as that has worked for quite a few games out there.

Well xfire is working for me.I stood out in Poitain and went into first person view and panned around 360 trying to keep the horizon about 1/2 way up the monitor.

resolution was 1680x1050,4xAA,16xAnsiotropic,had catalyst 8.6 installed,then did the 4800 hotfix, on a pair of 4870's,maximus formula mobo,q6600@3.6ghz,pcp&c 750 quad

xfire disabled
fps went from 42-65 as i panned around

xfire enabled
fps went from 78-120

not the most scientific test around but oh well :)

oh and i did a power test running f@h and vantage at the same time on my killawatt meter and the highest it peaked at was 632watts so minus around 20% loss for heat and the psu had to put out around 505 watts.

Think a 610 watt PCP&C Silencer would be adequate for xfire 4870s then?

Should be enough but i wouldn't wanna bet on the accuracy of a $20 power reader.

Reply to Ogdin

Thanks for the feedback Ogdin. Well today I sold the 4850's, and snagged a VisionTek 4870 from FXVideoCards real quick like :D Their customer support is A+++

I sold the 4850's to a friend of mine for only $20 less than what I paid for them, so I made out with the 4870 and $40 in cash. I just got overly frustrated with the issues, I was getting no performance boost with AoC like you were Ogdin, and I had that annoying inventory bug while crossfire was enabled. Not to mention im on a P45 which runs at 8x/8x in Crossfire, your board runs at full 16x, so the 8/8 might be contributing to some crossfire issues.

Difference in these cards is only the factory OC right?

I should say that is the only difference.
