So, I just ordered parts for a re-build, and I'm using a Lian Li PC-V1000 case that I already had....

The problem is, its just a PC-V1000, not a "Plus II," which means it doesn't have the VGA exhaust fan on the side pannel, and the side panel is just a big sheet of aluminum.

My concern is that I'm getting an HD4850, and I hear the exhaust on the stock cooler vents out to the side, which means it'll just run straight into the big side panel with no way to vent out the case...

Not sure what to do about this... you can technically order the "plus II" side panel with the mesh, as well as the fan kit, but the only place I could find online that has them would run me like $65 (plus shipping) to do so...

Add an  extra 120mm exhaust fan on the back and/or top and you'll be fine.

I'm not even sure where I could fit that on the case in question...

The 4850 should be fine in your case if you do the fan speed fix to 50-60% or more, but it might be loud.

If you are using the Lian-Li fans that came with the case then the first step should be to replace them with something that moves air effectively and quietly, such as the Scythe Slipstream 1200rpm fans. They are very quiet and efficient, and far better than the ones that Lian-Li puts in their cases. Also remove the air deflector from the back case fan, its pretty but unless you really have to put the case right against the wall, its a serious impediment to effective airflow, make sure you have at least 6 inches space behind the case for decent airflow. Make sure the rear fan is exhausting the air, and not blowing it in, Lian-Li has a habit of doing strange things like that. A fan speed setting of 40% on the 4850 will make it run much cooler and that setting is still quite quiet. Only other thing I can suggest at this point is to make sure that your wiring is nice and tidy to maximize your cooling airflow.

If you look at the stock cooler setup on the 4850 it appears to exhaust the air at front of the card in an upwards direction, while still inside the case it does attempt to direct the air toward the rear exhaust fan.
This link tells you how to set the fan speed on the 4850 to 40%

The link sets the value to 65%, substitue 40%.

Never under estimate peoples capacity for stupidity, and you won't be disappointed.
