Time for an upgrade?

Hi guys, when i built my computer last summer I was gaming on a 19' LCD @ 1280*1024, so the brand spankin new 8800GTS 320 was a godsend for me. Since then, however, my tax rebate check convinced me to upgrade to a nice widescreen monitor that uses 1680*1050. Now it's starting to seem like 320Mb of video ram isn't really enough for me to enable AA/AF when i game. So my question is, at 1680*1050, how much of an upgrade would a 4870 over my GTS 320? I'm looking for 50% or better performance.

Here's my current rig:
ASUS P5k
8800GTS 320
E4300 @ 3Ghz
4GB DDR2-800

And the games i currently play are stalker, Company of Heroes, Sins of a solar empire. I will be buying clear sky and far cry 2 when they come out and possibly age of conan. Thanks in advance!

More about time upgrade
  1. It would be quite a big upgrade. G80 8800gts perform about the same as a 8800gs/9600gso. FPS increase would be 30-60%, depending on game and resolution.
  2. Upgrade? Do you have the budget first of all? Your card is still good for now.
  3. Hmm 30-60% while good isn't quite what i'm looking for. I'll probably wait and take another look at things around winter time. Hopefully by then we'll have a refresh/die shrink from the green team, and some nice price cuts on the 4870X2.
  4. For now, the best bangs of bucks is on the red side.
  5. I have a 8800 gts 640... plays every game at max at 1920 by 1200 (except crysis)... I want to upgrade... but theres no point to lol

    P5K is a single slot pci-e2.0 x16 right?

i'd say wait for 4870x2 - but make sure you have a good PSU for it; i'd expect 650watt with 36-40amps on the 12v is good for the card and your overclocked processor if you already got it. Might even leave a little headroom to overclock the GPU.

I think it also requires 2x 6pin pci-e? but it might be 1 8pin 1 6pin, not sure on that
  7. The p5k is pci-e 1
  8. Ogdin is right, the P5K only has 1 16x PCI-e lane. The other runs at like x4 or something. And My PSU is the Corsair 620Hx which i'm confident will be able to handle the 4870X2 with ease.
