Ok, so I just got a new HDD Samnsung 500gb sata Hard Drive to go along with one that I already have but is filling up fast (WD Black 640gb). I was under the assumption (apparently wrong assumption) that I could just plug it in and it would be noticed in windows Vista.

The device shows up under the device manager area, but is nowhere to be found under My Computer or when trying to save a file to it. I tried updating drivers but it said all were up to date. What am I doing wrong/missing?

Thanks for any help.

You have to partition and format the drive to give it a "drive letter" so that it will show up in Explorer. Open up the Disk Management utility (right-click "My Computer", select "Manage", and navigate to "Storage->Disk Management" in the left pane).

You'll probably be prompted with a wizard, in which case you can just follow the dialogue boxes. Otherwise, find the new disk in the right pane, right-click on it, and create a partition, then right-click again and format it.
