I have been trying to get my Asus rampage formula and E8400 stable after a minor overclock of 3.6 GHz from 3.0. Sometimes when I run prime95 one of the worker threads stops running but I dont get an error. I notice it when my real temp says I have a 50% load. So basically the test starts out at close to 100% cpu load than dies down to like 25% then back up to 50% but does not move up any higher. Does prime 95 supposed to fluctuate the cpu load or always stay close to 100% load?

Are you running 2 threads?
Does it actually show one of the threads stopping in prime95?
Are you using the newest version of Prime95?

 

I am no expert in this but as i understand it, the way a computer works is that it takes into account how much work each process is doing, and allocates that process a certain amount of time to use the cpu. Then it will rapidly switch to the next process and give it some time on the cpu, etc etc. Thus if you have a bunch of other processes running at the same time as prime95, prime95 will not get as much cpu time and therefor it will appear to not be using all of the cpu, when in reality the entire cpu is already being used, although not entirely by prime95.

 

If you go to the performance tab in task manager you can check what actual percent of the cpu is being used.

Yes in the performance tab it says 100% as well as in core temp. The thing is that when the cpu load decreases the temp also decreases verifying to me that this is happening. Oh and yes I am running the latest version.

Right now I have been running prime95 for over one hour but with small fft instead of blend and it seems to be working fine.

how much does the temp decrease by? If its a few degrees then that is nothing to worry about (prime95 on my system fluctuated between 48C and 56C just depending on what test was being run)

Not by much. I would say 3 or for 4 degrees.

I could be mistaken, i but i would account that difference in temperature to a different Prime95 test being run (28k fft length, 256k fft length, etc)

If your still not sold, you could download OCCT and use that to stress test, comparing the results to Prime95

Do you have Round Off Checking selected in advanced options in prime?

If you didn't have Round Off Checking enabled then potential errors may have been ignored by prime95. Sorry to say it but if you want to make sure the system is stable you are going to have to run a full Prime95 test again (i recommend 12+ hours of blend test for complete stability)

If you still plan on overclocking some more, stop it and continue. If this is your goal, then I'd run it for an extended time(this is up to you). For me 4-8hours of SmallFTT, and 8-10hours of Blend.

Let us know how that goes. Also remember that if your temps are changing by a few degrees, dont sweat it. That is totally normal :)

Yeah, it changes on my machines too, depending on the test.
