Thinking of upgrading my 7950gt SLI for a single card solution, the only problem is my main games are bf2 and 2142.
The inquirer had some Nvidia 280 scores for 2142, cant seem to find any performance numbers for the 4870 for bf2 or 2142. Anyone have any ideas?
the 4870 would be able to handle bf2142 with out a sweat. the 4870 is a great performing card i would even think about getting a nvidia 280 because its way to over price and doesn't perform to much better than a 4870.

Well here is the thing, in TH VGA charts you can check the scores for 2142 and SLI 8800GT are top tog. With 8800GT costing $139 at newegg should I go for 2X 8800GT for $280 or the 4870?
If you already have an SLI mobo and you don't mind the ocassional game having trouble with SLI, then go for it. Otherwise, you're better off with the single 4870. In fact, single cards are generally preferred over multiple ones in SLI/Xfire, but that's slowly becoming less true with each passing month. Still, there are issues.
If you ask me, I'd go with 4870. It's a bit more money if you already have an SLI mobo, but like I said, no SLI/Xfire issues and you're practically garunteed that the card will get better with time due to better drivers. Nvidia's driver releases aren't quite as frequent and tend to be more geared towards making new stuff work and/or make old stuff more stable than to increase performance. ATI's drivers seem to get a mix of everything, performance increase included. Also, not sure, but 4870 might draw less power than 2 8800GTs and will probably also need a less powerful PSU. Not sure about connectors though.
For the first time I'm playing with 8x AA and Max AF in BF2142 thanks to my 4870. It's an amazing card! Drivers are quite raw at the moment, but quite impressive neverless.
