When I get my free upgrade disc in November(I'm running Vista right now),I plan on running a 500 GB Seagate on windows 7,and I would like to setup my 2 75 GB Raptors on a raid array, using either win xp or win7 as a operating system.I've set up the Raptors before on a xp system, but maybe win 7 is a better idea now.Any suggestions are thoughts would be appreciated.I would hope I can dual boot,as I'm sure win 7 will allow that. Thanks in advance for any help.

What kind of RAID? RAID0 or RAID1?

RAID0 would be focus on speed, you should pick Windows 7 because it doesn't have a stripe misalignment when partitioning. All Windows XP this have this issue, leading to lower random I/O performance (IOps).

If you want RAID, you most likely have to re-install the operating system. You won't keep the data on the RAID disk members. With Intel onboard RAID drivers it might be possible, i have no experience in this.

Could you restate your exact question?

I would use raid 0,and given your reply about windows 7 being the best choice,I would use Windows 7 on both the Seagate 500 GB,and the 2 Raptor 75 GB that would be used for the raid array.I just want to have 2 separate hard drive systems, one for everyday use,and one for gaming. Thanks for your reply.

You could keep XP on the Seagate 500 and install Windows 7 on the RAID0, that would still give you good RAID0 performance when using Windows 7.

So if you want Windows 7 on the Seagate 500GB also, it must be for other reasons than I/O performance. The stripe misalignment i talked about, only affects RAID0, RAID4, RAID5 and RAID6; striping RAID. It doesn't affect RAID1 (mirrors), JBOD or bare disk configurations. So Windows XP can do those fine.

sub mesa thank you for all your help.my plan is this, install windows 7 over the vista 64 I now have, and then hopefully use win xp with the 2 75 GB raptors,I'm sure there is a way to do this.I have already downloaded the raid setup onto a flash drive,as I don't have a floppy drive on this alienware puter.I want it so when i boot up i have the choice of win 7 on the seagate or win xp on the raid array on the raptors.thanks again for your help.I just thought of something else,if i use xp i won't have 64 bit.....looks like win 7 is going to be used on the raptors. :)
