Hey there, I have a 320g WD mybook that's rather old and I think the drive has failed. I plug it in, the light comes on and it spins up, then clicks four times and spins down then repeats, clicking twice the second time around. My PC doesn't see it either. Is there any hope or do I have a new paperweight?

From what I understand they don't want their enclosure opened. There are no screws or even a seam to pry open.

It is highly likely that your drive has transformed into a paperweight :(

Could be either the physical drive itself or the circuit board IMO

If you want to "reuse" the enclosure [by fitting in a new drive] you could do that by following instructions available at

1. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Open-a-Western-Digital-MyBook-USB-Drive./

2. http://carltonbale.com/2008/01/western-digital-my-book-opening-the-case-removing-the-drive/

It's the powered type. I've lost hope...

Thanks. I'll give that a try. It's already out of warranty.

I ended up prying open the enclosure and taking out the HD. I had an open header on my motherboard and just plugged it in. It worked perfectly. I'm glad I didn't pay for data recovery. Thanks.
