I plan to get a sata drive but i only have an ide port on my mobo. I plan to get an adapter that takes in the sata cable, and the converter sits in the ide port. It is powered by the berg connector, and then the sata drive gets its own power. I am under the impression that I should be able to boot off of this. Am i correct in this statement?
Yes, but generally you should look for a PCI or - if possible - PCI-express SATA controller, instead of using such emulation products. I've heard bad stories about compatibility, but if it works you should be able to boot from it.
Either way, both solutions are probably comparable in price, so the PCI controller would give you additional SATA ports while keeping your onboard PATA connector free to use.

I intend to use the sata to boot from. and from what i have heard, you can NOT boot off of a pci sata controller. and I only intend to use a hard drive and a disk drive. which is all i have room for anyways. but you say i should be able to boot off of this adapter?
Why can't you boot from a PCI controller? That's nonesense, maybe if you have a bad motherboard without BIOS support for interrupt 19 capture, which allows you to boot from them.
Note that i'm not recommending a RAID controller, but rather a PCI SATA controller, and those are bootable. Only having a bad BIOS without support for this (maybe those Dell/HP/OEM machines) should you have problems with this.

I have a d850mv motherboard made by intel. this is not a new motherboard in any sense... therefore as others have told me it would not be able to use a pci controller. i mean if you the sata adapter with my ide works, why should i spend MORE money to get the pci controller?
