SB 750 southbridges, 9950 Phenoms, HD4800 GPUS

We know quite a bit about the HD 4800 - but I was wondering if anyone had some interesting information about AMD's next chipset/cpu, they are touting it to supposedly be an overclocking platform, although given the track record I have a hard time believing that obviously.

I get some feeling that AMD's next chipset might actually support effective Quad Crossfire on 4 HD 4800 series gpus; seeing as it is currently not remotely functional :P

Anyways, any facts are appreciated but if there is only speculation available it can't hurt either.

Here's how I see their "platform"

GPU - Excellent
Chipset - Very Good
CPU - Bad

Still got some work to do, but AMD's getting there...

in today's news reel, watercooled HD4870s - Diamond currently has one available - apparently they can allow you to max this cards OC out for a ton of extra performance if you have a WC setup

I wanted to say that in all fairness, you have to give AMD at least a bit of credit in the CPU department at this point; because they are selling even the 9850BE Phenom for 235$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819103249

Really for a 2.5ghz processor with decent overclocking headroom its a very acceptable price/performance ratio. Even if a q6600 can outperform it in selective benchmarks, in real world gameplay/applications they are apparently very comparable.

Yes, the q6600 is better - i'm just saying its not like there is no alternatives, thats all. AMD is doing what it does well at this point, and that is targetting mainstream; even if the BE 9850 isn't quite as good as a q6600, its still an acceptable solution

I can say, as a whole platform, AMD has a stronger point than intel in mainstream.

At the high end, intel rocks, but at mainstream/budget, AMD gives more bang for the buck.

What OCing headroom are you talking about? I have seen a few 9850BEs @ 3.4GHz but they are running at almost 1.6v which is .3v above what AMD specs them at (Phenoms max on a 9950BE is 1.3v).

Even at that price the Q6600 is aroun $189-$199 making it the best deal.

Now AMDs next CPU, Deneb, May give it the room and bump to be a better chip but thats yet to be seen as its just a die shrink.

I will agree though that the 4800 series is just rocking. Great price and performance.

The fact that its the SB750 some people will buy the new mobo but meh. I don't think it will change anything.
