Sony said my laptop cannot handle a 2.5" hard disk >80 GB. I do not believe it, but before buying a 250Gb drive, I wanted to get some expert opinions. The Sony Vaio VGN-FS has a primitive Phoenix Bios. Thanks

it should work but use NTFS or something like that when installing so you could access the space(format using ntfs)

This model of Sony should support up to 500GB with no problems.
NTFS is a good choice, I agree with ubernoobie.

Make sure you buy a drive with the correct interface - I would guess based on what you said that it has PATA rather than SATA, but you'll want to check to be sure. If your old hard drive's connector has a whole bunch of pins, it's PATA (sometimes called IDE), and if it does not, it's SATA.
