I have just been given a PC with windows XP in Spanish. Will it be
possible to buy a copy of English windows and overwrite it?

Yes, you will need to perform a Clean Installation since you can not upgrade
from one language to another.

Well, you can't "over-write," as in upgrade, a Spanish version of
Windows to an English version, but you can replace the Spanish OS with
an English OS by formating the hard drive and performing a clean
installation.
