Old School (XP) or New School (Vista)?

Hey gang!

I'm in a situation which I'm sure some of you have been in and would like your opinions. I just upgraded to 4 gigs of RAM and as we all know XP typically can't utilize all 4 gigs. As of right now, XP only recognizes 3.5 gigs for me. For reference, I am also running a dual core AMD.

Keeping in mind that main use for my computer is video games, would the experts here think i would get better performance sticking with xp pro or switching over to my copy of 64 bit vista (in other words, being able to utilize the full 4 gigs of RAM i have but also running vista which tends to be a memory hog on its own)?

Thanks for your help, this seems to be the forum to come to for this type of stuff.

you could have the best[??] of both through a dual boot, then whenever it suits you go 100% with either although there is a good chance that microshaft will have windoze 7,, ie vista II ready soon ??>:)

I gave Vista ultimate 32 a chance and although I liked it as an OS, it gave me troubles with some of my games (BF2142 especially)...I do have 2gb of ram so that probably didnt help, so in the end i ended up going back to XP...

I think dokk2's suggestion makes sense...you could try out vista (and have an XP partition just in case $hit happens)...I say give it a try especially since you have 4 gigs of ram...

Let's face it. The tech world doesn't move backward. XP was a solid OS, but the future is moving beyond that. Vista 64bit has a lot of merits to its name. Despite its reputation for being a very buggy OS, I have found very few bad things that can be said about it.

I am in a similar situation. I am building a new computer, but cannot decide whether to install Vista 32 or 64 bits. Please someone help me. I think that I read somewhere that with Vista 64 there are driver problems.

Thanks in Advance

I have been running Vista 64 for quite some time now and I am not encountering any driver issues with my current peripherals or internal components. There are some old pieces of gear out there which do have issues, however, a lot of those don't have decent xp drivers either. Some vendors try to force upgrade sales by not updating their drivers, i.e. Creative Labs.

I think it really does not matter.
What games are you playing that would make effective use of over 3.5GB of memory? If not, what is the advantage of Vista for gaming?
But if you already have it, why not use it? Doesn't hurt - but as you recognize it uses more memory - and you will spend time uploading and tweaking - and as another pointed out just shortly before the next generation OS comes out.
Is your "copy of 64 bit Vista" a licensed copy or bootlegged? If the latter, then why be a thief for no gain? That would be stupid.
But if licensed - then do it or don't do it.

Vista 64. I got my copy post SP1, and it has been the smoothest move to a new OS i've experienced. I'm still in a dual boot config with XP 64 (you can use 4 gig and above with XP, you just need the 64bit version), and I hardly ever use it. Mainly I keep it because I installed it with a japanese language pack for my girl friend, and I get better performance in Quake Wars (noticeably and this is the only game I have like that), plus I don't feel like going through the hassle of uninstalling it.

For anybody who has concerns about Vista 64bit, rest assured, drivers issues are few and far between. I would say that any hardware produced within the last year and a half will have Vista 64bit support.

Another vote for Vista 64, with 4Gb of memory it runs very well and like the others have said, few if any Vista-related crashes.

I don't think Vista 32 should even exist, wouldn't consider it. XP 32 or Vista 64, and between the two on any reasonably new system with more than 2gb of memory, I'd go Vista 64.

I'm using Vista 64 with 4GB RAM and it works great. I upgraded from XP fairly recently and there was no noticeable difference in speed.

vista 64 is the future. Some things still depend on 32bit tho' so it really depends on what you plan to do /use it for.

Anytime M$Ft releases a SP for a OS that usually kills most bugs... however, there's still at least one that I know of... [it's a fiasco to run chkdsk until you learn how.]

IMHO, Vista is nothing more than xp in a new wrapper. The next version while due out soon... is probably years away from bugs being killed.

Currently I use win2k, winxp pro, and vista64.

As far as drivers are concerned most should be out by now. Programs whether 32 bit or 64bit can be run from vista 64. If you have trouble running a program in vista then is can emulate winxp.

So while there still are issues with vista, none of them are as bad as what the ads are etc. I bought it on a lap top [4gb ram] and I played crysis on it with no problems whatsoever... yeah on a laptop!

Vista is mostly about graphics. Lot's of eye candy... takes awhile to get used to it but no complaints here. There's more pluses than minuses, just make sure you put it in a V-8 if you know what I mean. If you put it in a YUGO, you'll probably pull your hair out. :pt1cable:

hey, is the interface on vista really that different than xp? cause it took my so long to find all the goodies/settings/options on xp, i don't feel like re-learning...=[

Next time you have a Vista machine up, right click on the desktop toolbar. Click on properties, then Start menu tab. Select Classic Start Menu. The goodies are easy from there.

Try Office 2007 if you think that's hard.

I have Vista 64. I upgraded from Win XP 32bit. I'm glad i made the move. I have not noticed a difference in speed except for programs loading fast on Vista(superfetch) which is great. Give it a try, I think you'll like it.
