I built my first computer one and half year ago. the CPU was about $450 and the Motherboard was about $200 at that time. I'm using this computer to development, internet browsing, a little bit gaming (so far not required much graphic), video editing, burning CD. In short, multi-tasks works. I want to upgrade my current computer so I can be able to do thing faster. Since sometimes my computer is lagged.

Should I build a new computer or should I upgrade my current one? which approach is better in term of performance and cost?

If build a new computer, which setup will be. (budget: < $1000)
If upgrade, which parts should I upgrade. (budget: < $500)

My current setup is below:

Is AMD 6400 is using AM2 socket, since my Asus motherboard has socket 939, I don't think it is compatible, unless I will also upgrade the motherboard as well, which one work well with AMD 6400 CPU?

I say clean-up the start list, maybe even buy a new graphics card (ATi 3870?/4850 when it scomes out) and stretch the life a bit logner. There isn't actually anything wrong with the machine, 4GB of RAm dual core etc.

Maybe even some light overclocking to make it run a smidgen faster.

If going with new rig (~$500-560, no LCD,KB&M):

E2180 (OCed to 3Ghz+)
P35-DS3L
8800GT 512MB
Corsair 450VX or better
2GB+ DDR2 800
500GB 7200.11 HDD (or re use old ons to save costs; will require new OS install)
A good HSF (ie Freezer Pro, or XIGMATEK S1283,etc)
Budget case, etc (or Re use old DVD RW,case, etc )

OC first, then decide on new build.
