I have an external 100 GB usb hard drive, partitioned into 2 eqaul sizes. I recently moved some files from one partition to another disk. the files got moved, but the partition is not showing the freed up space? where has it gone and how can it be reclaimed?

Thanks for you help in advance.

If you Moved the files to another disk, what probably happened is that they were "Deleted" from the original location. But Delete does not really do that. It simply alters the records to re-locate them to the Recycle Bin in case you change your mind later and want them back. So try emptying the Recycle Bin ON THAT DRIVE and see if you get all your space back as expected.

I have checked the Recycle Bin is already empty. I have run a defrag, check disk etc. No luck so far.

This is very strange. I presume you have verified that the files you moved off the external partition do NOT still show up in that drive's directories.

It is indeed strange. The moved files do not show up in the original location.

I have exhausted all options before posting this problem.

Ok

I moved all the remaining data to another drive, and formatted the drive. It now shows the correct space.
