Hi all, I am looking at building a new box mainly for Photoshop/image manipulation with some gaming on the side. I already have a sonata case and a TurePower 650w PSU from my current box that I am going to use with the new build.
So here is what I am looking at...
MB - Giga-byte EP35-DS4 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128087 CPU Q6600 or Q9450
GPU - Gigabyte 8800GTS
RAM 4G Kit-800(2x2G) Transcend
DVD±/CD-RW: Samsung SH-S203N
HDs 2x 320GB seagate in raid 1 for OS and 3x 750GB seagate in raid 5 for image files 1 500gb eSATA for photoshop scratch disc
OS Vista 64
PSU Antec TruePower Trio 650
Case Antec Sonata
I will probably wait til the new GPUs are released in a few weeks and take a look at them but the 8800GTS looks good at the moment
well if your're only into photshopping and not gaming then you don't need a good graphics card. next version of photshop is supposed to have gpu acceleration. but i'm thinking that you do game and it's a wise decision to wait around for the new cards. couple of weeks away.
also the two seagate drives in raid 1 for os. i'm thinking that two 250gb 7200.11 with 32mb cache would be even faster. the 320 are of older and slower geneation. try maybe even 2x 500 gb 7200.11gb drives. but since it's only for os and you have plenty more space, get the 2x250gb.
EDIT: sorry just noticed that it's also a gaming computer, please disregard the first remark.

$175 for a p35 motherboard is way too much. You can get a superior performing x38 board for just $25 more. Or a p45, the replacement for the aging p35, which is going to be out of production soon, for $99.99. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813130181
why not go for 8gigs of ram? If you're using this for photoshop the more ram the better. Also transcend? Kinda a no name brand and with memory prices the way they are I would at least go with a brand name like G.skill.
The value of raid-1 for protecting data is that you can recover from a hard drive failure quickly.
It is for servers that can't afford any down time.
Recovery from a hard drive failure is just moments.
Fortunately hard drives do not fail often.
Raid-1 does not protect you from other types of losses such as viruses,
software errors, operator error, or fire...etc.
For that, you need EXTERNAL backup.
If you have external backup, and can afford some recovery time, then you don't need raid-1.
If the OS and scratch drives need performance, consider the new WD velociraptor. It is pricey, but it DOES maks a difference.

geofelt - I actually meant raid 0 (stripe) not raid 1 (mirror) I have external backups (three) and want speed not redundancy.. I like the idea of the velociraptor but they are super pricey, especially here in Australia.
Dagger - what MB would you look at? All I want is a board with raid (ICH9r) anything else isn't that important. I will run a slight overclock but I am not going to push it at all...

CPU Q6600 or Q9450
GPU - Gigabyte 8800GTS
RAM 4G Kit-800(2x2G) Transcend
DVD±/CD-RW: Samsung SH-S203N
HDs 2x 320GB seagate in raid 1 for OS and 3x 750GB seagate in raid 5 for image files 1 500gb eSATA for photoshop scratch disc
OS Vista 64
PSU Antec TruePower Trio 650
Case Antec Sonata
Looks good. Go with the Q6600. Try and get some better quality and 8GB.
I will probably go for 8GB of RAM eventually but at the moment I am keeping to about $1000 (Australian) if I get a cheaper CPU I will get more RAM. Will have a look at the G.skill price.
They have a database of the fastest drives; look for comparisons with your application.
There are some specific applications that will benefit from raid-0, but
gaming is not one of them. Even if you have an application which reads one input file sequentially, and writes
it out, you will perform about as well by putting the input on one drive, and the output on the other.
If you are running your application now, turn on the performance monitor, and see how cpu bound you are, and how i/o bound you are. Spend more money on your limiting factor.

If you could get the Q9450 go for it.
You should consider 8GB's since you'll be doing photoshop.
and get a good Brand. Crucial. Corsair, G.Skill, kingston or another well known
brand.
thanks all for the advice, still haen't settled on the motherboard but the rest is looking like
Q6600 (the Q9450 is nearly twice the price here in Oz so not worth the small performance jump)
8GB g.skill PI RAM - with the saving on the q660 I am bumping up the RAM
8800 GTS Gigabyte VC. Like the new ATI cards but the 8800GTS is faster and quieter...
DVD±/CD-RW: Samsung SH-S203N
HDs 1x velociraptor for the OS and 3x 750GB seagate in raid 5 for image files 1 500gb eSATA for photoshop scratch disc. looks like the velociraptor beats the raid setup in performance and power usage.
OS Vista 64
PSU Antec TruePower Trio 650
Case Antec Sonata
If you are going to buy a Sonata (i assume 3) and not use its power supply, maybe you should grab another case without one.
The Antec 300(or even the 900) may be a good option as it will cool better.
I own 2 Sonata(the first and second one) cases and i DO like them, but they have limited intake that causes limited airflow in the case(good and quiet, but warm). Your hards drives will run about 5-7c cooler in a case with more vents in the front.
EDIT______
There is a video card price war going down, keep an eye out. the 9800GTX is cheap many places too. it may be a tight fit, but should fit.

thanks nukemaster. I already have the case and PSU. The price wars will take a while to reach Australian shores as will the new cards... Will wait till the end of the month and put in the order.
