i have a radeon hd 3850 512...when i install the driver suite given with the card it runs moothly...the hitch is tat it is about a year old driver....now when i try to update it by tryin to install a newer version such as 8.3 or 8.4 it says the driver version is not compatible with the current catalyst control center...Also after installing this new driver the monitor does not display the colours properly..when i roll back to the old driver everythin becomes normal again....wat seems to be the problem???

You may need to uninstall the previous drivers before attempting to install newer ones. In control panel's Add/Remove Programs, there should be a listing for Uninstall All ATI programs (or some such). I'd probably also recommend using a program like Driver Cleaner (in Windows safe mode)to remove any remnants.
