Hi! am trying to build a computer that can play a game like Battlefield 2, I really dont need a high end one, but one computer that can play it smoothly on medium settings. And I also have a $500 limit. I already have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speakers, I just need the tower. So I went to newegg and came up with this. Is this a good computer for the price? And recommendations? Different parts, Missing parts? Are these compatible? Anything will be helpful.

All this can be found on Newegg, my grand total was $480 minus $20 Video card mail in rebate, so $460(shipping in price). So is this good, and worth the money, remember $500 limit. Thanks!

Grab a cheaper mobo (after you read some reviews) cut abit back from the case and spend the saved up money on a better graphics card such as the 2600XT or the umm...

Get normal RAM if cheaper...

Maybe reuse case and PSU and etc.?

Try and get a 9600 GSO. The price to performance ratio is stunning.

Ok here's the deal. XP is like a 8+ year old OS that is about stop seeing support from Microsoft. Chances are you can find a freind who has a XP disc, pay your local mom and pops PC repair shop $20 to install it for you, or get it through roundabout ways off the net..... But paying $90 for a 8+ year old OS that is like 1/5 of the total price of your build....

The optical drive you chose in your build is a EIDE drive. Those eide cables are like honking big, they block airflow, and they overall suck. They went out with the horse and buggy. SATA ftw. SATA cost $2 than the EIDE drive, and it's well worth it.

This build will allow you to play your BF2 on high settings, or great FPS on medium settings. It's twice the build as the one you posted, and you will get alot longer lifespan for games with this build.

My old case is a dell 2350 mini tower and the power supply is 300W or lower, I cant remember. But I should look into the cheaper ram if they do the same job, but any suggestions?

Yes for the OS it seems like a lot of money for what I am getting. I should find a friend that has an xp disc, or from other sources. But I was wondering why you chose an intel processor because it seems like it is twice the price, but not too much of a difference.
***EDIT***
Actually the AMD processor is even faster then the one you chose. Its dual core with 2.7GHz and the intel is dual core with 2.53Ghz, and the intel is twice the price. Am I missing something here?

Why Intel?!?!?!

Because Clock for clock Intel is better and always have been on the new chips. That E7200 runs cool and fast due to the 45nm tech.
Its not literally 2.7 x2. The numbers on the AMD tell the story....5200 means roughly 5.2 single (not rly). Intels run better than the singles so its better than say a 5.0 single

Oh, I think I should do more research on processors, I thought you got what you read. I did not know processors that really differed that much.

The Intel will be better except you will need to cut back, alot on alot of stuff. Spend more on your graphics card. Your case is fine but maybe not your PSU I recommend this:

So I should stick with the AMD one? Remember I am looking for a budget gaming computer. This will be my first computer to build, and I plan on using it for 2-3 years, then once I get to college I will have more money to build a better one. So i want to stay as cheap as possible by not making to crappy of a computer. This is also for gaining experience, as my dad's friend who builds computers will help me if I need help.

Ok turk here's a few more benefits of that intel build. That case is large...which means it has plenty of room for that video card. Vid cards aren't what the used to be...atleast not the good ones. Today's cards are alot longer than the older ones. Also that case comes stock with two case fans (1x120mm & 1x80mm), not to mention it comes with a side airduct. All this means is that the case has decent airflow for what you want. It keeps your system cooler than the amd build you were thinking of.

That cpu (E7200) is mainly purchased for it's overclocking abilities, but it does just fine at stock speed. It's the new 45nm dual core, and it's low heat, and uses very little voltage. To be honest for what your getting for that $500 Intel build is a steal.

Well the thing is cheap is good BUT too cheap is stupid....

If u want to try overclocking....u could get the P35-DS3L, E2160 and an 8800GT
It cost me about 800 back in November so it should be much less now...with ram and the 8800GT being like $140

LOL...Turk doesn't plan on overclocking. Trust me on that. Turk is looking for something for $500 that will allow him to play BF2. No more, no less. I got that after reading his first post on here. I think Turk might have a heart attack after he plays his first game on that rig for the fact it will probably be the fasted rig Turk has used before. He's still in the AMD mode, so we know he goes back aways.

I guess it is a good computer for what I am getting, I also need a dvi to vga adaptar because my monitor is vga, but I will see if my dad agrees to it. In the future I plan on building serious gaming computer, but for now I will be using the computer for games like BF2 and my wii for other fun games

Yeah I plan on not going too cheap, just enough to play some good games. I am using BF2 for a template of some sort. I am in high school and I dont have a lot of money i can invest in the system, once I do I want to build another from scratch. I dont plan on upgrading this computer. But I will look into over clocking I guess just for the experience sake.

Reply to turk555

So will the build I first have play games like BF2 and BF2140 and similarly demanding games? Because without the OS I can get th machine for nearly $400 dollars, and that would be great. I will not use it too long, and it will be used more by my brother during the school year for work, and a little gameplay over summer break and maybe weekends.

Ok Turk, I changed the motherboard on that build in my first post to a good one that is $10 less than the original one I had on there. That still leaves this buld .93 cents over budget...before the rebates. grrrr.... darn...I came 93 cents away from getting to an even $500. I feel like I just lost on the "price is right show".

lol, but those this include shipping? Because to tell you the truth, in my dads eye, a computer is a computer, he really does not see gaming as being serious. And since he is paying, and I am doing this for expierence for the future, I want as cheap as possible without wasting money. I am very clear that it is stupid to go too cheap, and that spending atleast $1k will make a good gaming computer. But I want something basic that will be used for 30% gaming, 70% school work (word, internet, powerpoint), so the cheaper the more my dad is willing to pay. Because I believe if you want to go cheap, go as cheap as possible, and when you want something good, pay the extra money for something good. I mean if I pay less for this machine, that means I will have more money to pay for the next really good machine, so for this machine I want as cheap as possible with some good games. I will not use this computer like i said for more then 2-3 years, almost quick fix for the one in the future. Thanks for all the help by the way.

It doesn't cover shipping, but on the other hand your looking at $30 worth of mail in rebates. So it just about evens out in the end.

I mean if AMD can do the job, why should I pay twice the money? I dont need a super high end machine, something that is cheap without being to crappy cheap.

Change the video card, get the 8800GT 512mb instead of 8500GT. Well, Intel has the upper hand, and plus it overclocks heck of a lot better than AMD atm. So its your choice, if you get an intel E8400, and should you need to upgrade the chip to a quad, its the same socket. Plus budget cpus like the pentium dual core, work fine as well.

Everybody thanks for the help, but I think there is a misunderstanding, I am trying to find the cheapest way of playing BF2 with smooth game play on medium. I am using BF2 as an example game, I will play other games that require that much power. I honestly dont think I need a 512mb graphic card for the game, remember this is just a first built for some building experience and a quick fix for 2 years or so, then I will build a serious machine.

Turk, I switched out the cpu on that build up above in my first post to a E4600 dual core. And it's still a decent cpu that won't hurt your gaming. Infact you can overclock it later on if you so choose for the fact that board is a decent overclocker. As the price now stands it's...

TOTAL
$488.93
$458.93 w/Mail in rebates

or if you want to bring the price down even lower, you can switch out the present cpu with this one down below which will really bring the price on that rig down and still give you a gaming rig with a decent vid card, case, etc....

I get $490 with shipping and without MIRs with the 2.2Ghz processor. I might be wrong, but I tried it twice. But just out of curiosity, will the first build I put play the game?

You would really be struggling to play even medium settings with that AMD build. This build here will atleast allow you to play those games on medium - high settings with decent frame rates. The case, mobo, cpu, and especially the vid card on this build here is better all the way around. For less than $450 this is a decent build. The good part about this build is if you decide to overclock later on, you can get a decent heatsink for $25 and a cheap tube of thermal paste and OC this cpu if you so choose. It leaves you some flexibilty in those regards.

Thanks so much for your help. I think I will order this build from newegg, once I get my hands on a os, and I think that will be fairly easy.

I updated the video card on that build and that took off another $10. The card is just as good if not better than the one I orginally posted in that build, and newegg has them on sale right now.

I already ordered the parts, and they charged the card, so I cant make changes. =) At least it still comes out to the same price with MIR, I think the EVGA is more then enough already, and thanks for all your help!
