I have a similar situation and can not find any help. I have a HP Compaq Presario F700. Something has happened with the DVDRW drive and I can not find a fix. The first problem I have with the DVD drive is that when it is detected it is as a CD Rom drive. A music CD works fine but nothing else. When a DVD disk is placed in the drive it spins and then the screen messes up with a bunch of lines across it and the computer freezes. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming you need to replace your drive. At the very least, you can check the drive's connection inside your computer, or remove it and try it on another computer. In any case, if the problems continue, I'd suggest buying a replacement, especially since combo drives aren't that expensive nowadays.

You can get a DVDRW for the same cost as a combo drive, and it burns DVD's. A combo drive wont burn DVD's.
