My server (Windows2000 server) hard drive crashed. I want to copy the data from the d: drive. I took it out and connected it by USB to my laptop (WindowsXP Pro) when I try to copy it says it can't read the files. I can see them in my file manager, but can't copy them. I have changed permissions but it made no difference.

If your account doesn't own the files then you have to take ownership of them in order to change the permissions. Look for the "Owner" tab in the security dialogue box.
