Intel Quad 2.66
Geforce 9800GTX 512 (Can always SLi later)

I had a 680i and never had an issue with it. The data loss that I had read about was more likely on the 790i, not the 680/780, I believe.

If you want nVidia, you have to go with those options, but if you have been reading recently, ATI has been killing them in the mid/high end graphics market.

Get a P45, or and X48 (or X38 - no PCIE 2.0) and get the 4850 or 4870 (be careful - needs a ton of power - 2 6 pin connectors).

You should be happy with an ATI GPU right now and for a good way into the future, I believe (with the options to cross fire if you get the X48/X38).

Brilliant, but will I be able to get this within budget?

Dont really see the logic in getting a P45 board when most times in a review the better P35 boards perform as well and some times better.
A quad may be of use in future or if you play games you know to perform well with a quad or made for them.
Ati is on a high at the moment and i couldnt look elsewhere at the min.

Perhaps

x48: ~ £140 - 150
4gb ddr2 ram: ~£80-100
4870: ~£180-220 (ebuyer.co.uk has them for 180)
q6600: ~£115
PSU : ~£70

You should be able to get the above for a little under 600. If you can stretch just a tiny bit over the 600 get a good cooler to oc your cpu. As for PSU get at least 750w incase you want to go crossfire later.
