I would like to know if there is a utility that will tell me how many hours a hard drive has been used. Is there such a thing? I would like to know if i am getting a true new replacement drive or a drive with a couple thousand hours on it. There has to be something.

Thanks

Use a utility such as "DiskCheckup" which can read and display the SMART data reported by the drive.

Yeah just checked my smart output and its labeled Power_On_Hours. Here's a snippet of my output:

  1. ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
  2. 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0012 099 099 000 Old_age Always - 8944

Forgot to add: look at the RAW value not those threshold values they are not so useful. The raw value of 8944 means 8944 hours, which is little over a year of running time.

The manufacture date on the label should be a pretty good clue.
