Might sound noobish, but can I just use the current image of my win7 installation from my HD to clone over to my new ssd or should I just do a clean install of the os and programs?

If the SSD is replacing your old C, try using an image. If not, a reinstall is in order.

You can get a free copy of Acronis True Image from Westerndigital.com and clone your drive.

Acronis True Image is a good choice as it was mentioned above.
