OK my Dell has died and I am in need of a computer to run my cs3 software as well as my games such as Assassins creed, Guild wars, & Sims 3 when it comes out. I will be doing some editing in the future as well. I was told to build one instead of buying a $3500 gateway. I wanted to be able to fully expand my system when i needed too so i spoke to a pc builder and he gave me some specs to check out; which i will list.
Now theres this sale goin on at a store here that ends tomorrow but i am hearing bad thing sabout some parts such as the gigabyte and dfi 790i boards being dropped. I was going to go with the asus striker or the XFA or Evga 790i boards but these reports are kinda sacaring the hell outta me,.. these cards are being sold for $370+ so i dont want to waste my money.
Next theres the processor issue i can get the qx 9650 at $700 from $999.99 untill tomorrow or get the q9450 at the normal $299.99. Now thats 30% off the faster chip with higher overclocking ability, (i would like to overclock these chips a bit) but if i do get the qx9650 which im leaning towards what board will i use if i cant use the 790i??. I am told intels making a new board but its not out yet. please help me decide quickly if anyone knows??
the system i was checking out

CM cosmos s full tower $229
intel Core extreme quad qx9650... $700
samsung HD103UJ 1tb sata 32 mb buffer 8.9 seek time 7200 rpm...$159.99
thermaltake TP 700 watt.....$149.99
TT V1 CPU Cooler all copper with silent fan 59.99
4 gb ddr3 1333MHz Patriot modules low latency 7-7-7-20
EVGA nForce 790 sli nvidia 7901 3 way SLI DDR3 only, RAID,1394 Dual gb LAN, 6 x Sata
BFG 9800 gx2 pci-e 1gb GDDR3 PCI-express 2.0 2dvi, hdmi...$389.99
HP DVD10701 20x sata int 20 x internal with LS
and some fan controller/media reader (still looking)

Any ideas on what i should do ??
thanks in advance for your help here.

As an experienced NVidia NForce user I'd have to advise you get an Intel X38/48 and go Crossfire with a pair of 4870 cards. Faster, more stable and it can actually overclock...

Dell sucks, nvidia sucks!

find a local builder and use an intel mobo - kill 2 rotten apples with one stone!

the failure rate of nvidia is so high its unreal, the problem with each mobo are massive - it amazing there is no class action suit

its amazing people want free advise, when the system dies the run to best buy and buy the first thing on sale -- support a local builder maybe one day he support you! i am sure hes got some demo systems around for you to borrow until you get one built properly

" was told to build one instead of buying a $3500 gateway"

Well that's the first great bit of advice. Heres the perfect system for you:

CM cosmos s full tower <--I have same case, beautifull
intel Core extreme quad qx9650<-will clock to 4.2 lapped
2xSeagate HD's running RAID 0- or 4xHD's running in RAID5 +1 for backup
Zalman 850W cooler with RAID5 or 750W with RAID0
TT V1 CPU Cooler all copper with silent fan <- don't need cooler with QX9650 stock one works great, otherwise xigmatek with crossbow bracket
4 gb ddr3 1333MHz Patriot modules low latency 7-7-7-20 <- prefer corsair myself
Gigabyte X48T-DQ6
2x4870's, xfire

Again, my XFX 790i has not issues (except with a Creative sound card, but I *should* have known better than that...). The Asus Striker II also preforms well (probably better).

Change that CPU cooler. The Xigmatek with bolt-on bracket is better:

gamerk316, some NVidia NForce 6/7 series work fine but most are a total disaster. That much has been known for a while. Fortunately for you you got a good one. I on the other hand didn't... Twice...

Intel X48 are much more likely to work.

The 790i cannot be compared to the 780 and lower series.

It, with the p3 or better bios is a very stable platform.

My Q9450 hit 3.6 on stock voltage, with a slight bump to the Northbridge, and the fsb/memory unlinked.

Been running 3.4 24/7 for the last 3 months.

The 790i/Q9450 combo is the same price as the 9650 chip only, and DDR3 is not cheap.

I am running 2 x 8800GTX's, and am perfectly happy.

That said, I can see me leaning toward the intel board on a new build, due to 4850 Crossfire.

But, the 790i is VERY easy to OC, Noobs included.

I'd go for X48, DDR2 800 (or higher) RAM, PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W or a Corsair 650TX or 750TX, and a 4870 (or two)

ok so Im leaning towards the x48 and building a crossfire system, but which x48 board is the best for overclocking and not too complicated?

Reply to necasio

the GA-X48T-DQ6, runs my QX9650 at 4.2Ghz (has done 4.5Ghz) with nothing overvolted to ridiculous amounts. Supports ram to 1600Mhz so plenty of headroom to clock with good ram and basically the most stable motherboard I have ever owned. It's the end product of the X38 tech so you know it's all been tried and tested.
