I have windows XP home SP2. After 2 years my CD writer has stopped reading
or burning discs. The light keeps flashing and "My Computer" file stops
responding at the same time.
My event viewer shows; "event ID 9, source atapi. The
device,\Device\Ide\IdePort1, did not respond within the timeout period".
My help and support centre tells me; "If there is a disc in the CD-Rom drive
it might need replacing or cleaning". This problem occurs with any disc
including blank ones and also at times without a disc at all.
Could anyone please tell me how to rectify this problem.

Yes, it's time to replace the drive. You might want to replace it with a
DVD R/W if you don't mind spending a little more. Otherwise, you can
get a CD-RW drive for $25-40 USD. I like www.newegg.com and they have
some really good deals. Of course, it depends on what country you live
in.

Might try also a CD lens cleaner disk, but I'd say there's a pretty fair
chance that the drive is toast.

Thanks people, I had already tried a cleaner disk without result. I'll
remove the unit because it's a nuisance as it is and have it for breakfast.
I'll replace it later with a DVD recorder.
