I have a stock Dell dimension 4700 pc. yesterday, i tried to update the bios (from xp) and after that the system froze, would not start, gave me 5 beeps.
i thought that the MB was fried and bought a new P5-GC-MX/1333. Plugged in the Pentium 4 2.8 ghz w HT CPU - just 1 long beep and the system would not start. next bought a core 2 duo cpu, thinking processor was dead too. but no, same result. even psu's fan does not run if any cpu is plugged into the main board.

do i have a bad board or is it because of my 305w psu? the asus manual recommends a min of 350w. could this be?

It sounds like your BIOS update didnt take and it rendered the motherboard usueless. You could send it back to dell to get it reflashed but it would be as cost effective to get a new one like you did.

I think the power supply may be inadequate for the new motherboard. Are you also trying to run a video card? If so, which one?

Get this power supply:

or if u have a few more bucks and are running a higher end video card:

Your PSU could be the problem. Or, the board might not be recognizing your RAM.... but it does sound like the PSU. The suggested Corsair PSUs are both excellent.

If you need to get by with less:

is sufficient... but those others would be a better buy.

The last dell I (dell dimension 8200) had used a special power supply, even though it used the standard atx 20 pin connector. The wires were basically rearranged. That could explain why the new power supply changed the beep code you got from the mobo.

I agree that it sounds like your mobo is fubar, also agreed you should just buy a new mobo. But the bios on alot of motherboards is removable and can be replaced with a new one. Finding a match can be hard and removing the bios requires a simple special tool.

Here is a place i found. I never used it myself but it's a start.

The only thing "special" about the 250 watt psu in the D8200 was the fact that it had no switch, other than that it's a standard ATX psu with no "rearranged" wire's, and the 305w is the same.

Well I definately don't wish to debate this issue with someone who calls themselves delluser1 lol. I will just say that i could never get mine to post with any thing but the psu it came with. also the working dell PSU could never pass my psu tester. The tester worked fine with other PSU's I owned at the time. It's been awhile though.

The normal procedure is to power up the PC system, watch for error message on the monitor screen and listen to the PC beep tone. A single beep during boot-up process is normal and does not indicate a failure if the system continues to boot-up.

1 Beep tone - DRAM refresh failure
2 Beep tone - DRAM Parity failure
3 Beep tone - Base 64K RAM failure
4 Beep tone - System timer error
5 Beep tone - CPU failure
6 Beep tone - Keyboard controller error
7 Beep tone - Virtual mode error
8 Beep tone - Display memory read/write error
9 Beep tone - ROM BIOS checksum error
10 Beep tone - CMOS register read/write error
11 Beep tone - Cache memory error
Continous Beep tone - Memory or Video memory failures.
