My other laptop has been \'shutting down\' for 6 hours

First I had an annoying popup that I couldn't get rid of, then my programmes started to freeze, my mouse stopped working, then when I eventually after several hours got it to start shutting down, it won't do anything else. have unpluggged battery but when I put it back in its still shutting down. cant turn it off or do anything at all. this has been going on for 6 hours.

Press & hold down the start button till the laptop turns off (5 -10 secs).
