Yes very much worth the upgrade...i would probably go for a 1600x1050 resolution model.....its a nice size for gaming and your gt isn't going to cope too well with any higher res.
Look for one with 1000:1 contrast ratio and low response time (2ms)
Samsung make some very good monitors (i have 2), but im sure that other makes are just as good (eg LG).
Ignore dynamic contrast ratios. There's a good chance that the first thing you will do when you buy a monitor is disable dynamic contrast. My Samsung 2253BW is 8000:1, and I can't read text on a white background because it is so incredibly, blindingly, staring-at-the-sun bright. 1000:1 static contrast is pretty darn good though.
I would say 24" for a future proof monitor. You can play 1080 HD movies if you ever get a blu-ray drive. When you get a larger monitor you will have to get a newer video card most of the time. Not all at once, but even with a 22" you will notice a perfomance hit with your current video card.
I have a 24 inch one and its awsome... my 8800 gts 640 plays every game max / AA at that resolution except crysis... and its awsome for web surfing... and editing documents... I get 2 FULL pages in word on the screen at one time... its really nice when editing a paper for school

very true, i turned it off as well. i couldnt really see things. it is better now with only static contrast ratio of 1000:1
