I have a 500 GB hard drive that when plugged in and turned on, I can hear a healthy spinning sound, but no icon or indication on dektop that it is being recognized. It worked before. Is it possibble I did not disconnect the hardware safely?

More likely it just needs a drive-letter assigning to it.
Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

Look in the bottom-right panel.
There may be bar there which represents your Verbatim drive.
It will have no name or drive-letter, and it will labelled as "Raw".

Right-click it and choose "Change Drive Letter & Paths".
Click "Add".
Choose a letter.
Click 'OK'.
