just built a new comp but my new RAM is DDR2 1066 Corsair, and in the manual for it, i quote, "Corsair's line of 4GB memory kits are designed for PCs featuring 64-bit operating systems. Installing 4GB onto PCs with 32-bit operating systems is not advised nor supported under warranty."

why isn't it advised or supported under warranty?

A 32-bit operating system can only address 4GB of total system memory. This includes video cards, various onboard memory, etc... This usually only leaves between 3 & 3.5GB free for the operating system. I'm sure the reason Corsair is saying it isn't supported under warranty is because of all the noobs returning their RAM as defective because they installed it in a 32-bit operating system and couldn't see all the RAM. I don't blame them. I wouldn't want perfectly good RAM returned to me just because the buyer didn't do their reseach either.

Do you think it would be worth it to upgrade from 32bit to 64bit Vista? Or just wait for a new OS?

I personally have 64bit Vista Ultimate and haven't had any problems with it at all. It seems like all the people still bashing Vista are the ones who "heard" it had problems, but have never tried it. Either that or they are trying to run it on an old computer. If you run Vista a few days and allow it to sort out your HD indexing and Superfetch it runs a lot faster than right after it was first installed. I know this is going to require my anti-flame suit, but oh well!

I meant from 32bit vista going to 64bit Vista?

I would say it's worth it if you bought the Retail version of Vista since you only have to contact Microsoft and request the 64-bit disk. I think that way you only have to pay shipping and handling. If you bought an OEM version that makes the decision more difficult since you have to buy a whole new copy.

I personally use Vista Ultimate 64bit, and I like it alot. Even the programs that I use for work all have 64bit compatible versions, so i can use my desktop for work and personal use. If you're going to be using the computer for home/personal use, then it would definitely be worth it to move to Vista64. However, it has to be a clean install of Vista64, since you cannot "upgrade" from 32bit to 64bit.

I bought the OEM version...*sigh*... That is the dilemma I am going through right now. Hard to cough up another $100 just on the OS when I am going to buy new RAM and a GPU, but to get the max out of them it would be wise to make that purchase.

Vista 64 is great, but it requires a very good pc.

The 64bit version uses up a little bit more RAM, but the extra usable RAM you gain should more than make up for it. 64-bit Vista has come a long way, in terms of compatibility, from where it was when it was first released. There are still some older programs that may run in 32 bit Vista and not 64-bit Vista, so if if there are any programs that you deem critical do your research and make sure it will run in 64-bit Vista.

Very well stated and I have seen the exact same things. The single most common item I have seen are older printers with no updated drivers.

Just as a clarification, of course this 4GB warranty statement does not mean we won't honor defective memory but, it is in fact there to insure that buyers are aware of the 32 bit OS limitations.

Guys, I was thinking about getting 4 gigs of corsair Dominator memory myself. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145214

To put on this mother board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128345

So would it be pointless in purchasing this ram considering that I'm still on windows XP? If it's not protected under warranty if used on a 32 bit system, does this mean that the memory will go bad or stop working correctly, Just by using 4 gigs of ram on windows xp? Lastly, will I be able to over clock the memory?
