Word :    Username :

so, ive got 4850 in crossfire. what is a good monitor resolution to take full advantage of CF?

i was thinking 1920x1200 but i think i might still be able to go higher and still keep things at the 60+fps realm.

what are your guys thoughts?

I am currently running a 19in at 1440x900. its a great lcd but i need bigger i think.

throw me your thoughts.

1920x1200 is a good resolution, and it also allows for full resolution blu ray playback :)

Any higher (namely 2560x1600) is somewhat mixed in gaming results - some will fly, but some will have problems even with crossfire.

The main thing that I've found with gaming in high resolutions is that some games don't support them. I game in 1920x1200, and Dawn of War, for example, doesn't want to know about it. 16x10 is the highest it has last I checked.

1920x1200 seems to be the sweet spot though. Grab yourself a nice 24" monitor (or 2) and you'll have one nice setup :)

Also: if you have an Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 you can pump them up to 1080p settings with a 24" monitor, as 1080p translates as 1920x1080, something smaller monitors can't pull off.

I recommend the Iiyama ProLite B2403WS monitor. It's not overly expensive, I got 2 for less than €1000, and they are really good quality. They have a HDMI and VGA port, along with a HDMI => DVI cable, and some pretty good built in speakers.

I would also suggest a 24" and if you want to push the cards more just crank up the AA & AF.

For useability and compatability reasons I would also recomend a 24" screen, the others have covered the main reasons for this.

Crossfired 4850's on a 19" screen thats gotta fly :D

Yup, +1 for a quality 24" screen.
If you have the cash to burn, Dell's 2408WFP is a great 24" monitor.

Here's an article to refer to if you're going to get a 24" monitor. It's what made me get the ones I have now:

If you want to do some real research on a new monitor, check out Anandtech's display section and prad.de's review section. The latter is in English so no need to worry. Both are excellent resources for making an educated decision on your monitor.

Read the FAQ:

SLI/CF shines in resolutions like 1920x1200 or higher.

what is up with the 24" lcd suggestions.. i know it's bigger, but if you look at the 22" lcd's they cost ALOT less. my point is the price jump for a measly 2 extra inch does not make any sense at all. Dell 24" LCD $599 / Brand-name 22" LCD $200ish. I got 2x HP W2207 22" LCD's for $250 each STILL cheaper than one 24" LCD. i'm sorry guys i just dont see what the fusses were about on 24"'s. BTW HP 22" are nice for look and functionality check them out.

2 reasons:

1) 1080p (22" are 1680x1050)
2) Good 24's (like the Dell) use much higher quality displays - the Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP uses an S-PVA display that has a much wider viewing angle and much better color and contrast than the TN films used on most 22s.

I use a 22", and I have used (but can't afford yet :() a 2408WFP ultrasharp, and there is a huge difference in the color and overall quality of the monitor.

If you dish out a few hundred $ for a top of the line graphics card then why not dish out a few hundred $ for a fantastic big monitor that you'll probably have for longer than the video card anyway?

Really though, I never worry about spending big on a monitor simply because unlike pretty much everything else in your computer, it WON'T be out of date and unable to keep up with high-end max-settings gaming in 12 months. Same goes for keyboard, mouse, and sound system. Splash out on 'em, treat them well, and they'll save you money in the long run.
