For over a year I've had my E2160 overclocked from 1.8 GHZ to 2.8 GHZ using a great guide I found here.

For some reason, I can't overclock anymore. The bios says it should be a 9x310... but when I save it and exit the bios it goes straight to 9x200 on the boot-up screen in DOS. When I go back into bios, it is still sitting there at 9x310.

If I change the multiplier to say 6xnumber... it will change to 200 on boot-up, but the multiplier stays changed and becomes 1.2GHZ....

So I guess the problem is the CPU core frequency always reverts back to 200... anyway to unstick it? ;p

Check the battery on your motherboard. Changes in the system clock indicate issues with that, but id say that A) your CMOS doesnt have the information you entred because it randomly powers off and loses the info or B) or the CMOS is corrupted. Either way, reset your CMOS and try a new battery.

How do you check a cmos battery with a multimeter?

Remove battery from motherboard.
Stand battery on edge.
Positive lead on the smooth flat side, Negative on the other.
The voltage should be stamped on the battery. 3v is common.

Removing this battery will also reset your CMOS.

Reinstall the battery + side up.

^+1. Looks like the battery is dead in deed. It is also possible your heat sink may have become loose. If the heat sink is loose, the OC will fail due to high heat (happen to me a few times). Also the E2160 should be able to hit 3Ghz providing you have a good HSF.

Some bioses will show the battery voltage which should be around 3.3v.
