Hi all,

Many of us, including me, are on a Q6600. I have been thinking, since these new price cuts and the introduction of the new Q9400 today, it may be time to move to 45nm tech. I am just interested to know what you guys/gals are looking to get.

Here is a Quad summary list, feel free to correct me , if wrong:

Core 2 Quad Q9650 (45nm, 3.0 Ghz, 1333 Mhz, 12MB L2, 9x multi) ?
Core 2 Quad Q9550 (45nm, 2.83 Ghz, 1333 Mhz, 12MB L2 8.5x multi) £223
Core 2 Quad Q9450 (45nm, 2.66 Ghz, 1333 Mhz, 12MB L2 8x multi) £200 **being phased out**
Core 2 Quad Q9400 (45nm, 2.66 Ghz, 1333 Mhz, 6MB L2 8x multi) £178
Core 2 Quad Q9300 (45nm, 2.5 Ghz, 1333 Mhz, 6MB L2 7.5x multi) £173 **being phased out**
Core 2 Quad Q6700 (65nm, 2.66 Ghz, 1066 Mhz, 8MB L2 10x multi) £146
Core 2 Quad Q6600 (65nm, 2.4 Ghz, 1066 Mhz, 8MB L2, 9x multi) £116

On a side note, do the 45nm Quads suffer from the Wolfdale temp problems?

Cheers,

Me x.

I myself went with a 9450 last week. I cant really justify the price increase between some of these procs but if money were no object i would have waited for the 9650. on a side note does anyone know how to change the fan speeds on a 4850? Mine are running at like 80 C under full load.

I run Vista C:\Users\*youraccountname*\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles\ edit the xml document in there if there isnt one in there you need to make a profile from CCC then go back in and find;

<Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="manual" /> ****
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="60" /> ****
</Feature>
</Group>

Those 2 lines 1st one you have to set to manual the second is the fans overall speed I chose 60 as it keeps the card below 60 durring folding and games but 50 is a bit quieter but youll stay in the mid 60's under load. Side not the change will not come into effect till you reload the profile, as well every reboot will require it to be reloaded again. But Vista and low power state are great.

Word, Playa.

I'm looking to build a new pc, but i'm not looking at the 45nm quads - they cost too much compared to the Q6600 imho. Btw, there's a mistake with your summary, the 65nm quads have 8mb l2 cache :)

I'm not moving from my Q6600. Simply because I'd have to get another MB. And if I'm going to do that, it will be based on a time when my Q6600 can't cut it, and what ever platform is faster (Nahlem, or whatever AMD throws up on the table), budget wise. :D

the Q9300 and Q9450 are great the Q9550 is useless, just OC a Q9450.
They have the same everything except for the speed. The Q9300 has its L2 cache halved, but its still better than the Q6600 we all love.

yep, now all i have to do is wait for the 4870x2 to come out and i will be set, great price in that link, wonder how i missed it first time.

Err... that's one hell of a price, 172.50 euro's for a Q9950. Dat's $257.347 US dollars. And the Q9450 is... $330 bucks atm on NewEgg. Geeesh.

Unless that was a typo.. I'd jump on that pretty quick, even though my MB doesn't support it. :lol:

edit:

Unless my currency converster isn't working right. :oops:

Pounds...not Euros, so you are looking at around $386 including the VAT we have to pay...

I'm in the market for a quad core. What happens in 30 days? I've heard Nehalem is coming out soon (initially targeted at enthusiasts) but I believe were still 12 months away before the consumer-oriented parts arrive.

hmm, really, usually go with dabs but i suppose for all the money it is, and i would actually rather save on postage and get it all in a one'er.

guess i will just wait till the x2 and debate a little longer on the HD.

I'm trying to get one on the cheap from work! I recently picked up an Asus 4870 for £164.50. Online, it is like £183. So a nice little saving!

It's good to work in IT lol!

I'm considering waiting for the Q9400 to drop to ~$200 US (or to get lucky and find a clearance on a 9450, wither way, I'm not in much of a rush). Anyone know if any reputable sites might do a comparison between the two? I see the only difference is cache and I remember an article showing cache to have negligible impact on two very similar processors.

Anyone with some insight?

From what I have read, Intel is ahead of schedule on Nehalem. Expected release is sometime late September with parts available 45-60 days later, or sometime after October (motherboards won't be available until then). With it being that close, I am going to wait on it. It's not socket 775, so if you do want one you'll have to upgrade your motherboard as well.
I believe this is the platform that will finally push my trusty old Lanparty socket 939 into retirement.
