Quick question. How much better is the 8800GT Alpha Dog edition (XFX) than the 9600GT? If I could get either at relatively the same price, which would be the better card?

8800GT > 9600GT.

For future reference, you don't need to ask in the forums, Toms puts out a "Best graphics cards for your money" article each month. And the last page has a comparison of the relative power of each card:

If you can get them for the same price, definitely go for the 8800 GT. The 9600 GT is actually a pretty decent card, but in the end, it is just simply weaker than the 8800 GT.

Check this out if you like numbers...

If the 8800GT is a 256MB version, the situation is more complicated, but as long as the 8800GT is 512MB, it will be better than the 9600GT, though the 9600GT is by no means shabby.

I would like to say that the 9600GT will be around longer because it's newer, but I guess that's not necessarily true. Manufacturers are likely to give up on the 9600GT first.

Agreed. I own a 9600gt and it plays anything I wish. at the time I bought it, the price was very attractive for the performance. However, after price reductions across the board, there are stronger cards for a little more than the $150 I paid for it.

If you can spend $200, I would go for either an 8800gts 512mb or something in that range. the 9800gtx is around $200 too and performs similar to the 8800gts.

Thanks. Everything I read points to the 8800GT but I wanted to hear it from non-resellers...meaning actual users. I have the 9600GT in but saw the 8800GT come down in price for about the same and was curious. Looks like I'll make an exchange. Thanks for the advice.
