I've been a longtime reader, first time asker.

I currently have an EVGA 8800 ultra installed on a Gigabyte GA-M68SM-S2L (rev 1.0) . I understand the motherboard comes with nForce chipset optimised for nVidia based GPUs and graphic cards.

I wanna buy a Radeon HD4870 and replace the 8800 ultra. do you know whether the motherboard will support the Radeon HD4870 card all right? As in, can I expect the full performance from the HD4870 despite the motherboard's chipset being nForce compared to the 8800 ultra?

And oh secondly, do u think it even worth upgrading from geforce 8800 ultra to hd4870?

thanks so much.

keep the 8800 ultra, its faster in many benchmarks

the solution is really what do you want to do with the computer?
videos, gaming, surf the web, or just be the leet tech geek on your block?

8800 to 4870 is like trading 1gb of ddr2 800 for 1 gb of ddr2 799, why even consider offing the cash for the solution?

the nforce chipsets have added instructions and compatibilities with nvidia gpu
however adding an ATI/AMD card to the motherboard shouldnt make too bad a transition

make sure to remove all old nvidia drivers then reboot then install the new video card then the drivers

but, ati drivers have been reported subject to much debate on actually functioning and working well with all motherboards IE> chipsets

final suggestion
EVGA produces lacking products, check your specs vs another 8800 Ultra and compare what the defined specs are for the card.

an XFX 8800 ultra will beat any EVGA 8800 ultra ive seen yet
also 8800 ultras are very hot and demand a lot of power
the benefit of the 4870 is that it uses less power and makes somewhat less heat

the two are different on many levels but on whole the 8800 ultra is the best revision you can get from nvidia
