Hi,

I'll upgrade my rig in two or three days. Thing is I need to choose between these configurations:

- AMD Opteron 1218 - skt AM2 - Intel Core2Duo - skt 775
2.6 GHZ, 2MB Cache 2.53 ghz, 3072K
- MB Gigabyte GA-M750SLI-DS4, - MB MSI P7N SLI Platinum,
Nvidia NForce 750a SLI, S-AM2/AM2+ Quad Core, nForce 750i SLI

Both configurations have the same price!!! (My budget is limited, and I can't go further). But only one of these two configurations will run with an MSI 8800GT Zilent, 2*1GB PC 6400 Corsair XMS2 4-4-4-12, Seagate 500GB, 32MB cache. Help me choose between these two configurations.....It will be a gaming PC (not extreme gaming.....maybe next month I'll add a second 8800GT for SLI mode), and of course I'm willing to overclock!!! Which chip is better both for overclock and gaming performance?

Thank you in advance.

*sigh*

i've come to the darkside... i'd go w\ the 7200.

but i saw today that the prices have dropped alot, e8400 is like $170... dunno if its worth $50 more over the 7200 or not but maybe.

on paper the 7200 looks alot better than other models in its price range like the 4500-4600

Id go with the intel, my e7200 ive currently got overclocked to 3.2ghz without raising a sweat.

Id also agree with roadrunner on the board selection not only will you save money but in general the Pxx chipset is more stable than the Nvidia equivelant.

The only Opteron worth touching now is the 1210 to OC... In fact perhaps the only AMD processor worth buying!! The more expensive models are wiped on the floor in price-performance by C2D at all levels.

8800GT is totally outclassed by the 4850. Heck it evens gives the 8800 Ultra a run for its money with AA turned up!!

So, you said Intel.....Intel will be it then, but like I said my budget is limited. I can't just get a 4850,at least not until Christmas, the 8800GT will do just fine for now. I'll get a good C2D CPU and a P35/45 based MoBo.

Thank you guys.
