my question is if you are building a server and the motherboard supports ECC memory does that mean you have to use ECC memory. or can you use standard non-ecc memory?
The specifications usually are pretty clear on memory requirements. The fact that a server supports ECC memory doesn't necessarily imply that it requires it. My Compaq server supports ECC memory, but it works fine with standard memory (and it hasn't crashed in more than 2 years). ECC memory obviously is better as it can recover from a single bit memory error, but unless you run critical applications, ECC memory isn't required.
It would be easier to answer your question if you told us what motherboard you plan on using.
Shadow7037 93 and bryce1337, I voted your posts as useless by mistake and I have no clue how I can revert that vote. I do apologize for my mistake.
