IMHO the E8600 is an awesome chip but really an expensive overkill compared to an E8400 or E8500 at the present prices. It is a lot of money for 2-300mhz and no really realworld noticable performance difference plus they will be releasing EO steppings of the E8400 and E8500 which should improve their OCability.

The E8600 may be most viable as a 100% certainty that you will be getting the new E0 stepping.

With the 10x multi it is very nice though, with 9x on the E8400 I am limited by my memory for high overclocks, even with DDR2-1000. (G-skill doesnt clock particularly well, my GeiL DDR2-800 will hit higher speeds for benching)

4.5Ghz on air easily. I'll be testing it on a TRUE Black at some point in the next week, but the chip is stable at 4.5 with 1.392 vcore. For a 45nm dual core, air cooling can easily handle a vcore that low :D

The only way they could do that is to release a quad with a multiplier of 10 or more. Quads generally hit a FSB wall which limits their OCing ability, hence the value of the "QX" chips, whether you like it or not

^The Q9650 is coming with a multi of 9 so that may help. Its not decently priced yet ($530) but when the price comes down it may become a nice choice and possibly be the 45nm replacement for the Q6600 depending on the OCing ability.

If I get brave...I will put it under DICE but I've got some other chips I need to fry first.

I can get CPUs very easily but motherboards cost me full price so I'm nervous of DICE on an expensive board capable of such speeds.

Here is a list of top E8600 OCs:

Sweet! Looks like they are pretty close to 7 already !

I wonder how many more core2 revisions they will make this close to Nehalem being released ?

I am really in a way surprised that Intel is going to release Nehalem so soon. They will be competing against themselves. AMD doesn't have a prayer.
