I have a Palm VIIx. Apparently it is upgrade-limited due to the extra
wireless apps taking up space in ROM. Is it possible to re-flash this
unit with a ROM image from a IIIxe, and re-claim the extra ROM space?
Could the machine then be upgraded to OS 4.x? Any guidance would be
appreciated.

Sorry, The VII and VIIx do not have Flash ROMS. What you have, is what you
got period

VII and VIIX both are listed as having Flash ROMS on the Palm
Developer's Site here:
Could be typos, I suppose. With a handle like 'PDA Man', I hardly
feel qualified to question your response!
The re-flashing isn't a big deal. I'm not using the wireless stuff,
though, so having that gone forever in exchange for an os upgrade is
worthwhile swap IMO.

That would be risky. The hardware is not identical, and most of the
ROMs had tweaks for specific handhelds. If you don't mind the risk of
potentially turning it into an awkwardly-shaped paperweight, you
could try.
Fortunately, there are programs (e.g. JackFlash) that can remove and
insert programs in the ROM, so you might be able to get some of what
you want without nearly as much at stake. There was just a thread
about this a few days ago; look on Google groups.

Also, 'Romeo' can be used to create custom ROM images. The main page
even talks about removing the wireless apps from a Palm VII.

Maybe a better way to have put this, is that the VII and VIIx do not have
FLASH ROMS that any user has been able to upgrade to any other Palm OS. This
particular subject gets touched on about once every 30-45 days, either in one
of the USenet newsgroups for Palm, or one of the more popular Forums,
www.brighthand.com, www.palminfocenter.com.www.1rtsrc.com etc. It has been
discussed at great lengths, answer is the same, YOU CANNOT UPGRADE A PALM
VII series Palm's OS. Some will state it is NOT a Flash ROM, some will state
it is becuase the ROM is filled to capacity and is not accessible etc. The
short answer is this. In my almost 10 years of avid "Palming" I have NEVER,
EVER seen or heard of ANYONE upgrading a Palm VII series to another OS.
(Excluding the Palm Software Update that goes into the RAM) (And now I will
hear about the guy, whose dogs vetenarians wife's uncle who heard about a
hermit in Syberia that has done it)Anyway in closing, a good Google search
of "PALM VII Flash ROM" or Palm VII OS Upgrade" will find plenty of
threads-postings on this subject, all leading to the same conclusion, It
Cannot Be Done.
P.S. When you look around at many of the descriptions/reviews that came out
with the Palm VII series you do indeed see that it has a FLASH ROM. I would
say that at the time PALM was marketing the bdevice that way, and may have
been , in the beginning, considering an Upgrade in the future. But as you
well know, by the time a PDA is ready for an OS upgrade, the next generation
CPU is different or the architecture wont support the OS improvements. It
may very well be FLASH upgradeable, to something PALM could have written or
had thought about writing, but like many things in the PDA world, just never
happened.
If you have ever tried to put the wrong ROM on another one of PALMS units,
you will know that it stops you before you even get started. Even if it was
Flash Upgradeable by the user, there isnt anything to put on it, so the
whole discussion is really rather moot anyway.

Thanks, Ray, that's just the kind of info I was looking for...
