I'm thinking of buying a laptop and the one I was looking at comes with a geforce 95, now I heard the 84s and 86s laptops pieces were shot, I also heard the 95s were 86s only better/faster. So:

1. Would the 95 be affected by the 86 crashes
2. Should I settle for a laptop with a 2600 (or another affordable mid-range card) in it?

I think there's laptops that come with mobile radeon 3850s. If you can get one of those you could kiss all your worries about defective hardware goodbye and you'd get pretty decent performance for a laptop.

Granted, I haven't really found any yet...

If you're still bent on a GeForce 9500 though, I wouldn't worry so much. I'm pretty sure that the 9500s are manufactured somewhat different than the 8600s, thus not part of the same defective family. And even if they are, Nvidia and the manufacturer will have to take care of it. So in the worst case scenario, you'd be sending your laptop back to someone for a few weeks.

My understanding is that the G95xxM shrink of the G8 was not affected.

The HD2600 is not a 'settle' they're equals when equaly equipped.

If the laptop you're looking at has a GF9500 I'd say it's likely to be ok, there's been no mention of it affecting the newer parts.

^^ thx for the responses, I still got a week before the date at which I plan to buy my laptop (which ever one it may be) so I'll see how the news evolves

@TheGreatGrapeApe, I was told the 2600 (non pro/xt) was equal to the 8600gs, though I know there is little difference, other than I noticed the ATI laptops seemed somehow thicker (though that might just be cuz the 2600 is slithly older than the 9500 and as such bigger laptop)

HD2600 non XT (no real pro in the mobile segment) is the same as the GF8600GT, the HD2600XT is better, and then the GF8700M is better than that.

Only thing that sets them apart is AA and you won't be using that, nor prefer it over native resolution.

As for older, the HD2600 is newer than the GF8600M, and while the G9500 is a refresh and hence 'newer' it's not a newer process it's still 65nm too and it's also in the same TDP range, no new features. The HD3650 however is both on 55nm and has new features, yet still sits in the same type of laptops. IMO that had more to do with there being no higher ATi and thus the GF8700M and GF8800M occupied the laptops that the HD2600 and HD2600XT did. And often they occupy the same frame like in the HP laptops.
