I have a sata cable that covers the data and power connector on the hd end and only the sata data plug size for the board. Can the sata channel on the mb POWER the hd. The cable came with a wd drive. That drive had a standard 4 pin plug and a sata power plug.

For HDDs with both Molex (4-pin) and SATA power plug, you should NOT connect them both! This can cause problems. Connect only one, either the SATA or the Molex.

You do need a power cable, you can't just use the red data cable it cannot be used to supply power to a HDD cause it uses up to 30-35W peak current which is pretty much.
