How to get sound back on my Windows XP

I have recently lost all sound- cannot play any music. In Device Manager - "audio" tab is states under sound playback device: "No Playback device" and it is greyed out and I cannot change setting. Under Sound recording tab it shows "SoundMaxXDigitalAudio" as the default.
How can I get "SoundMaxXDigitalAudio" as the default for Sound palyback???
