Many people regarded 3870x2 as a joke when it first came out, overpriced frankenstein monster that don't perform as well as it looks, and only meant to take the top place in benchmarks. But since the launch of 4xxx generation, prices has dropped as low as $240 after rebates. It performs as well as 4870 on many benchmarks, plus some models can run as many as 4 monitors off one card, at the same time.

So, the question is, does anyone think it's a good idea to buy it for a new rig? A friend is building a new gaming rig, and I was think of recommending it. :p

I think the 4870 usually does a little better on benchmarks, and uses less power and is less hot, but if it is that much cheaper, I think it is definitely worth looking at.

I would consider it, but only if it fell to the $199 price point. There are to many issues with the x2 to make me want to spend $240. The 4850 comes close, and is $70 cheaper. (without the power, heat, CF, etc issues.)
