I sent in my 8800GTX as an RMA.. waited 4 weeks, they sent me back an 8800 ULTRA, turned out it was faulty, i sent it back... 4 weeks later, they offer me 2 different types of 8800GT's... i say hell no, why would i want 2 different cards?!?

nearly 3 months past, and they offer me 2 8800GT 1GB cards.. I believe I can SLI together.

Should I accept this? Is this better then 1 8800 ultra? What would you do?

Depending on the games you use and your monitor/size resolution - it could be a better deal. What motherboard & CPU do you have?
The 1GB models of the 8800GT isnt quite so useful for a smaller montior.
If you happen to be playing games that don't scale well in SLI a nice OC'd 9800GTX would be probably be better.

If you have an SLi motherboard, take the SLi 8800GT - they perform extremely well! Unless you have a 30" monitor... they fall behind sometimes at that high a resolution.

I've always kinda wondered if the 1gb 8800 GT in SLI would actually make use of that amount of memory, or if the width bus would still bottleneck it, anywho...

More to the point, do you have an SLI board already? If you do have an SLI board, sure go for it. 8800 GTs are great in SLI if you have a good processor to back them up. I used 8800 GT SLI with an e8400 at 3.6-4.05ghz for quite a while and I was pleased with the results.

I'd tell them to send me one of their HD4870s or the 280GTX. You shouldn't have to take a card that performs worse than the one you RMAd. Thanks for posting this heads up about MSI also. Always good to see how some manufacturers deal with their customers. 5 months of RMA hell.

They didn't send hm one that performs worse than the one that he rma-ed. They sent him back 2 cards which will outperform the one he rma-ed.

Anyways, i'm not defending MSI and i'd never buy a GPU from them for the exact same elicited reasons that the OP illustrated; however while I do find a 2x 8800 GT rma exchange a touch odd, its not a wholly bad deal really :P

Although more seriously, I bet the OP could squeeze them for a 9800 GTX at least or maybe a gtx260 with a bit of effort; lol

Well i have this as specs

Q6600 @ 3.0GHZ
2GB (2x1024) DDR2 667 ram
Some sli mobo from Asus.. P5N4 or something
21.6 inch monitor, 1680x1050
320GB barracuda hd

with 2 8800GT's 1GB each, should be awesome right?

Oh, yeah, that's stellar. You'll have a great time with two 8800GTs in SLi! Enjoy! Sounds like you got a good deal (finally)! Hope you have a powerful enough PSU...

That's not right. The 512mb versions of 8800gt runs out of onboard vram at such high resolutions. The 1Gb version in sli will stay quite a bit ahead of a single 8800ultra no matter what.

I'm going to buy MSI from now on. From an old g80 8800gts to 2 g92 8800gt, free upgrade! A big one too. :D

Well, from a G80 8800GTX to 2 G92 8800GT. Not quite as much of an upgrade...

A huge upgrade, a single 8800gt is only 15% slower than g80 8800gtx/g92 8800gts. And this is the 1gb version that don't hit the vram wall on high resolutions.

G92 8800gts = g80 8800gtx

Think of it this way, since 8800gt 512mb sli outperforms a single 280gtx, is that a lot above a single 8800gtx?

It's overall an upgrade in 90%+ of cases, but it isn't as huge of an upgrade as a G80 GTS to a pair of G92 GTs would be.
